WAVES AT NIGHT

THE SEA

The Horrors. I dont know. I loved ‘Sheena Was A Parasite’ (and the mind splitting video by Chris Cunningham) but I never really bought into the hype, or admittedly really gave their first album a proper listen. So it was such a surprise when I had a flick through their new offering, Primary Colours, to hear a complete shift in direction. Hardly a logical progression for the boys, but their new album seems them dipping right down into a mix of dark ebbing shoegaze, sharp driving ‘motorik’ drums, and haunting keys (reminding me of The Cure’s early goth punk album, ‘Pornography’). The vocals come off sounding a little like Mark Burgess of The Chameleons, and even the tone of some songs too, with more of a hint of Joy Division and all things dark post-punk from the early 80’s. Yes its very derivative but what the fuck isnt these days? I guess this one just took me by surprise quite a bit and struck a chord with me.

Now on a different note, this new sound weve been hearing of late is really starting to blow up. Full of wobbly synths, deep techno and fucked up dub and hip-hop beats, coming from artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Flying Lotus (and surprisingly a whole bunch of outfits from Glasgow). Bullion is another on that growing list and his new EP ‘Young Heartache’ is seriously addictive.

there is a much better album by the name of ‘primary colours’
it’s eddy current suppression ring and it quite frankly shits all over the horrors’ album.

hahaha, EVERYONE knows that the cuz shit over most other stuff out there!
But the horrors and Eddy cuz just arent comparable, one puts on one of the best shows in Australia, and one (from what ive heard) puts on a pretty fine show in the UK. Thats all.

Your blog is a thing of beauty. Gorgeous design, and great content. I’ll be back. To coin a phrase.

The new Horrors stuff is really good. I’ve found myself listening to ’sea within a sea’ quite a lot surprisingly. I wasn’t that keen on the first listen. But your right it does have that joy division, chameleons feel to it. Rather like it.

This place is just awesome. Congratulations on your taste. I’ve found real gems here. Did you hear the last PRZTZ ep? They have a killer song called WMC. Check it out.

So we share a point of view, how there’s an aura of Joy Division in this song. I reckon there are also slight mixtures of Bauhaus, Pet Shop Boys, Supermode and….Marilyn Manson. What an unusual combo.

As much as I love The Horrors, I have to admit something disappointing.
Have a proper listen to The Fuzztones’ “My Brother The Man” then listen to “Count In Fives” of The Horrors’ first album. Surprise . . Surprise . .

Time For Us All To Love – such an awesome tune and one of the best examples of London’s underground talent. Love it.
