Time for another Song Of The Day. I was going to include a track off the new Passion Pit album because Ive been digging that recently, but its just too sugary and I know I’ll just be completely sick of it in two weeks time, like MGMT.
So on with the time tested goodness.
In the burgeoning UK music scene in the early 80’s, Shriekback never quite got the credit they deserved. Consisting of members of Gang Of Four and XTC should have been a recipe for success enough. This tune comes from an early ‘82 single and as the title suggests contains one thick bassline.

Sticking with the same UK scene, A Certain Ratio are another band Im surprised arent more well known. They were signed to Factory Records, and even come off sounding like a funkier Joy Division. They were one of the first big bands to really explore the fusion of punk, funk and disco, and you can hear their influence through alot of DFA bands these days. This comes off their first album ‘The Graveyard and the Ballroom’.

James Chance (aka James White) was a key figure in No Wave, carrying links to Lydia Lunch and playing a combination of improvisational jazz-like music and punk in the New York music scene since the late 1970s, in such bands as Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, James Chance and the Contortions, James White and the Blacks.

This last track I dont want to go into detail on, but I have heard that possibly, maybe, probably they just may be coming down here to Melbourne to tour for the first time in a while………….

re: James Chance – this is some of the most brilliant stuff to come out of the so-called “No Wave” scene. But as great as this is, no studio recording truly captures the fiery, funky, frenetic spirit of Chance live in concert. Check out the “Soul Exorcism Redux” re-issue – a live show from around 1980 that documents the raging brilliance of this artist.
waves at night, you would like au pairs if you enjoy this stuff. It’s a bit more gang of four/delta 5.
LOVE au pairs!
