I’ve been on an intense binge diet of The Artist when he was formally known as Prince. Everyone knows his hits, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain etc. but his early back catalogue reveals gold that far eclipses his later number ones. These tracks have literally been on constant rotation keeping me sane and dancing for past weeks.
Controversy and Dirty Mind are both funky electro pop simplicity at it’s BEST.

From his peak period, Sign O’ The Times is a dark brooding, stripped back social commentary while Alphabet Street bounces along like a Sesame Street anthem on Amyl Nitrate.

Why doesnt he get the same recognition as MJ?
Good point JD – could be because Prince didn’t just write the standard mainstream ‘pop’ song all the time and pushed his themes a little more than MJ. True musician!
sign o’ is a classic. one of my all-time favs!
maybe it also had to do with marketing and public awareness due to jackson five fame? Besides, world-wide recognition is overrated anyway, especially since many talented artists are overlooked simply because they are different, and that brings us back to the ’standard mainsteam’ idea, which means i am a rambling and bored fool
Erotic city is another one of his absolute best – you should definitely check it if you haven’t already.
I’ve become a Prince collector (vinyls) myself. ^^ Love his music
Thanks for the heads up about erotic city, amazing, going straight onto repeat as of now.
How shit like this end up as a B-Side I’ll never understand…
Maybe it’s to make tracking down obscure 12 inches that much more satisfying.
controversy def the best of all. snuck in to see him play @ rod laver few years back and controversy went for no shit about 20 min. so good. i even like the ott pop awesomeness of the new power gen shit. seven is a mad pop song
Prince poke me!
Erotic city rocks…didnt& doesnt get the recognition Mj gets cos lets be honest he not quite Mj..great musician no doubt & prob the next best all time entertainer but michael was king of it all..there will never be another Mj…
