Arthur Russell. Avant garde composer, disco pioneer, and buddhist cello player.
To celebrate the upcoming release of the radio documentary ‘Arthur Russell: Tapes of Thought’ by documentary maker John Connell, Waves at Night received two very rare, previously unreleased and unheard recordings of Arthur Russell – and you guys will be able to stream and hear the goodness.
‘Arthur Russell: Tapes of Thought’ is currently in its final stages of editing and will be broadcast on ABC Radio National’s ‘Into the Music‘ in the near future.
It will also be released in a limited edition special cassette tape with side A featuring the documentary and side B featuring a mix of Arthur’s music with special covers by a number of musicians including Paradise Kansis, Kirin J Callinan, with more to be announced.
The documentary will also be available to purchase through Connell’s blog and will feature lots of other Arthur Russell goodies in the coming weeks.

Arthur Russell - Oh Fernando Why
Here’s an out take from the Necessaries album, recorded in late 1980, early 81 (Necessaries were a power pop quartet fronted by guitarist Ed Tomney). Apart from Ed Tomney, there was Jesse Chamberlain on drums, John Connell on bass and lastly Arthur on cello and vox. Previously unheard and unreleased.
