A sub-genre I had never properly been introduced to, but is essentially an amalgamation of two of my favourites, is initiated here through an outstanding Afro/Tribal-Dark Dance mix courtesy of Waves Fav, Luke Brown (P.C.P., Negativ Magick, Leslie Salvador). It’s always really refreshing to hear something that actually feels dusty, dug up and like a lot of labor mining has gone into it.
It’s actually produced for a pretty interesting and worthwhile new venture in Melbourne: Shebeen, a bar that sends all profits to support developing countries around the globe. Exact details and location haven’t been announced yet but we’ll keep you in the loop when it happens.
Check back also for the caliber of previous tune selections from Negativ Magick here & here.
Simon from Shebeen:
Myself and a few friends are working to open a non-profit bar in Melbourne, called Shebeen, later this year. The idea behind Shebeen is that it will sell exotic beers and wines from the developing world. The profit from each sale supports a development project in that drink’s country of origin – so if you buy a Vietnamese beer, you’re supporting a project in Vietnam, and so on. The bar itself is named after the shebeens of South Africa: the illegal speakeasies that sprung up during the apartheid era, when the white government outlawed drinking and trade in the black townships.
We’ve been thinking about Shebeen’s music for a while. We thought it could be interesting to play mixes from different DJs we know, but ask them to select tracks that have something Shebeen about them. I asked Luke what he thought a tribal mix might sound like, and this is the result. It’s Shebeen’s first mix, hopefully many more will follow.
