These days I’m finding that electronic music is just getting louder and noisier, to the point where you just can’t find its groove. Well it’s seems that a very talented 17 year old from the UK is trying to redeem that lost house groove, that we all grew up with, under his alias Louis La Roché. There was a little confusion when Louis first demo’d his track ‘Love’ on the net, fellow bloggers were convinced that it was a new track from none other than Thomas Bangalter, which, to me, could only be the biggest compliment you could receive towards your own music.
La Roché has just released his debut EP, Peach, online for all to enjoy for free from his myspace, www.myspace.com/louislaroche. It contains five amazing cuts of the purest house music, drawing inspiration from the old Motown sound through to the disco beats of (early) Michael Jackson and Daft Punk.
Louis also goes under the other alias of Night Facilities, where he is producing more of his own music, slightly different from that of his other project but with the same intention of retaining that groove. You can also download a collection of his amazing remixes, again for free, from his ’space’.
Keep an ear out for this up and coming talent, because i’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more from him in the near future…
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the likes of Riot in Belgium but it seems one of it’s members, Beni Single, has been working in the shadows on a new track for the upcoming ‘Relish Compilation EP Volume 2′, due out in June, from Relish Recordings. Could this be a new direction for Beni, well i certainly think we’ll be hearing a lot more from him. This is the sort of sound that’ll keep the kids bouncing in the clubs, whether you’re into French house grooves, Crookers basslines or Switch fidget squelches.
Third - The appropriately titled new record from Portishead is due out at the end of this month, April 28th, and I am extremely excited. It’s been 10 years since we’ve heard from the British trip-hop trio, and if you love your psychedelic electronica then this album is certainly going to cure those seedy Sunday hangovers. The track ‘Machine Gun’ is reminiscent of the Nine Inch Nails sound layered with huge industrial drum samples which are then joined by Beth Gibbons ghostly cry and eerie synths that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Jean Michel Jarre record.
Definitely make sure to purchase this record once it’s available, Portishead never disappoint when it comes to transporting our senses to another universe.
The Acid Girls hail from California and specialise in dropping beats at numerous raves in L.A and also dropping beats on their own blog! They have just completed a stunning new remix of Dizzee Rascal’s tune ‘Sirens’, transforming it into a catchy dark electro track including a haunting sample of a distress siren during the climax!
Here’s a tune to look out for in the coming months, it’s a brand new Mystery Jets track (produced by legendary dj/remix artist Erol Alkan). It’s remixed by Switch and he’s used a dark eerie beat thats perfect for those 3am club sets! Thanks to Asian Dan for finding this quality rip of the track.
The new kid on the Modular block is Ladyhawke aka Pip Brown and she is already creating a flutter around the world. Originating from New Zealand, she has traveled through Sydney and Melbourne and now resides in London where she continues to write dreamy synth-pop ballads drawing on influences such as Stevie Nicks and Van Halen (what a combo!). Ladyhawke already has a cult following which will soon explode into bigger things once her first single drops.
‘Back of the Van’ is the first official release from the half-bird half-lady songstress and will be out soon on Modular bundled with a massive collection of equally catchy remixes. Along with the Van She Tech remix, which we posted a couple of weeks back, the single also includes stellar remixes from the likes of Mock & Toof and Fred Falke!! Falke brings an added funk to the song, adding a huge slap bassline underneath her subtle vocal melodies. Pip also lends her sexy vocals to a track on Pnau’s latest album which could easily be mistaken for something straight out of the fluro era!
Keep an ear out for her next single ‘Paris is Burning’ which is set for release in June!
The Glimmer Twins have been spinning tunes since 1987 and have always shown huge diversity in there sets with a mix of disco, house, electro, classics and hip hop.
Their remixes are also extremely diverse, remixing for such players as Bloc Party, The Killers, New Order, Roxy Music, Isolee, Phoenix, Munk, Snow Patrol, Calvin Harris, Shirley Bassey, Junkie XL and the Chemical Brothers.
This wide array of influences is present on their new LP ‘Gee Gee Fazzi’, which contains collaborations with Princess Superstar, Freeform Five, Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, Optimo Espacio, Kenneth Bager, Ray Mang, Foxylane, Baby G, CJ Bolland and many more. It’s a funky ride through disco roots and techno dreams, and what makes this an even better listen is that each track flows into the next, seemlessly.
Be sure to check out their interpretation of Olivia Newton John’s classic ‘Let’s Get Physical’.
Beyond the Wizards Sleeve is the tripped out love child of producers Erol Alkan and Richard Norris. If you love your 70’s psychedelic rock as much as I do, you’ll dig what these guys pull together, they enhance all the classic sounds from the era including horns, percussion, and wind instruments and chop it up in one giant bong all for us to inhale. They have released a bunch of remixes for artist such as the Chemical Brothers, Tracey Thorn, Midlake and just recently Goldfrapp and Late of the Pier. Amongst the remixes the pair have also released 4 mini-albums entitled Birth, Spring, George and West, each one providing a journey into strange soundscapes and colorful samples, perfect for those seedy sunday afternoons!
As my first post on the blog i thought i’d throw together a quick little live mix showcasing some current blog hits with a few older classics. I included some new Fred Falke tracks to celebrate his tour in April, one is his sexy remix for The Whitest Boy Alive, which seems to be taking everybodies fancy, including Knightlife, who played it as the last track in his set the other night. Also included is the highly anticipated new remix from Van She Tech for the incredible Ladyhawke, this is going to be a killer in the clubs, download it separately from the tracklist below!
I’m playing tonight at the massive disco dj battle between electro front runners Miami Horror & Knightlife. I’ll be playing some mashed up beats from 9 - 10pm, so come early and share a brew and some beats with me!!
