Man I wish I was there…but then uber self-absorbed American douchebags would have wrecked it for me. Please come to Australia so that I don’t have to keep hearing from my dad about how he watched them in Sydney. Even then, it was with Wolfgang! Blast.

French Friday: Philippe Zdar

Yeah. It’s Anzac Day and I’m giving props to Frenchies. Well with the news that We Love Sounds is going have Cassius as part of its line-up, along with Mr. Oizo, !!!, Lindstrom (yeahboyz!), The Whip and a Marina-less Bonde do Role, it looks like OneLove have actually done something right. Now for them not to let fluoro kids in their shindigs. My big up to Gallic kids this week is in relation to this, so Philippe Zdar is the man of the hour.

Apart from being uber-producer extraordinaire to artists like MC Solaar, Chromeo and our very own (as in Melbourne) Cut Copy, Mr. Philippe Cerboneschi has produced some tremendous work of his own. In the mid 90’s, his work with Etienne de Crécy under the name of Motorbass was as slammin’ house as slammin’ house could get, but there was still that touch of funk, most notably on the ‘Around the World’ remix.

After meeting Boom Bass whilst producing Solaar’s album, they formed the group Le Funk Mob, which then went on to be Cassius. There is not a week where I don’t listen to 1999. I simply love it. Their body of work over the years has always had that certain sense of now, along with some hip-hop roots.

Not surprising…they love Flavour Flav. Enjoy.

French Friday: The Buffalo Bunch

Well, it has been a while since I’ve posted anything on this blog. The start of the exam period last year to be exact. A lot has gone on in the world of music during my blogging hiatus, including me going to the greatest musical show inspired by Jean Michel Jarre in the history of the world. Not much of the new stuff out there has really tickled my fancy. I’m a huge fan of the Peter Gabriel meets Giorgio Moroder love fest that is “Sexuality” by Sebastien Tellier, to name a few. The quality of the release isn’t surprising when you look at who manned the production boards (Eric Chedeville, Romain Tranchard from Modjo fame and one Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo). If you haven’t bought it yet there’s something wrong with you.

Back on topic. Something as rad as French Friday was the only thing that would bring me back. What better way to come back than to have a special on The Buffalo Bunch. Recently, Guy-Man’s little brother Paul has received praise for his release “I Thought That” under the name of The Migrants, but today we’re kicking it back to the old school.

I’ve already shown love to the Crydamoure label before on this blog, but I just can’t help myself. Paul’s releases with Raw Man (Romain Seo) as The Buffalo Bunch releases on Crydamoure and Scratché are top notch. Their remix work of pretty much the who’s who of French music at the time, also hits the spot.

In an ideal world, the two get back together. Fusing Raw Man’s love for metal (he’s in a band called Amen Birdman at the moment. yeah.) and Play Paul’s obsession with the Blade Runner soundtrack…it’s pretty lethal. Alas, some things are just not meant to be. Doesn’t mean we can’t get down to their tracks, though. Enjoy!

No going, kids…stay in school

I have been really slack of late. It looks like the rest of the WAVESATNIGHT crew haven’t got their priorities right. For me, there will be a self-imposed hiatus from blogging, due to coming exams. Not fun-on second thought, school isn’t meant to be fun!

Advice for you cool cats out there who are doing exams - don’t go out. You will fail miserably. Fight your urges to procrastinate however hard it may be. At Klaxons, the last weekend before I knuckle down, I expressed my anger (even though I was just a tad starstruck) to Cut Copy maestro Dan Whitford for putting their tour during exam time. Why oh why you dirty pirate hooker?

Instead of calling the waambulance, I’m taking some advice from my main man Robert Smith and putting on a brave face…

Big up to Crydamoure

yo. With the advent of this blog and it being called “WAVESatNIGHT”, I find it only fitting that we pay our respects to the less appreciated half of Daft Punk and his label. Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo set up Crydamoure Records with Eric Chedeville under the moniker of “Le Knight Club” and released some quality tracks not only by Le Knight Club, but by Archigram, Paul Johnson and DJ Sneak.

In 2003, the artists on the Crydamoure label joined to co-produce the 12” “If You Give Me The Love I Want”. The track here, found on this release, is funkier than Sly Stone’s hairdo.
The Crydamoure Waves compilations encompassed the whole catalogue of the label’s releases and are more than a worthy addition to one’s music collection. If you can find it, you’d be dumber than your average footballer not to buy it. Compared to the all conquering solo releases by Thomas Bangalter with his Stardust and Together side projects, Le Knight Club is quite understated indeed. The “french touch” scene owes a lot to this label…and for this, unfresh raises the fist.
