BAG RAIDERS INTERVIEW!!

The Waves at Night crew thought we would catch up with the crazy kids over at the Bag Raiders camp to talk about their upcoming EP release, current remixes and ceral variety packs. Here’s what Jack Sabbath (Brainzar from the B. Raiders) had to say…

WAV: Firstly, how did you both meet?
BRAINZAR: We went to the same school. I was a year above Chris but we used to hang out and smoke cigarettes during breaks in orchestra practice.

WAV: What was your inspiration to start producing your own music?
BRAINZAR: We both got into computers and computer music while we were still at school. When we started out we used to listen to lots of Autechre, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin… Warp records stuff basically. So i guess we started trying to emulate bands like that. It wasn’t until later on that we really got into dance music.

WAV: Which artists are you influenced by today?
BRAINZAR: Fred Falke, Soulwax, ELO, Pilot, Picasso, Nate Danja Hands, Cool & Dre, Jeezy, Weezy, MIyazaki, you know… Little Richard, TLC, Keisha Cole, Nat King Cole, Old King Cole, Coleplay etc etc

WAV: Do you each have individual roles when your working on a new track or remix?
BRAINZAR:
I do all the production work and Chris mainly cleans the studio and brings me coffees while i work. haha. No seriously… we both work pretty hands on on everything. It’s not like we have roles like Chris plays all the keyboards or Chris do the drums of whatever. We’re just like everybody do everything. Feel the love

WAV: How did you guys come about collaborating with the Fools Gold label?
BRAINZAR: By the mighty power of the internet. A-Trak hit us up a year or so ago before he came out and we went down to his show and met him and then we just kept in contact on the email etc.

WAV: I’ve noticed from listening to your mixtapes and hearing about your recent guest vocalist for the new EP that you include a lot of hip hop tracks. Is Hip Hop a genre that you’ve always been interested in?
BRAINZAR: Yeah in one way or another. We’ve always been listeners that’s for sure. Recently we’ve also been dabblers. It’s always good to be doing different stuff so things are always fresh. Like a variety pack of cereal. Hip hop = Nutra Grain, Dance music = Coco Pops, Free Jazz = Fruit Loops, Rock Music = Sultana Bran… We’ll definitely keep on doing hip hop stuff when we can.

WAV: Did you ever expect Fun Punch to be as big as it is?
BRAINZAR: Nope. It’s been pretty sweet. The internet and radio has been kind to us…

WAV: The video for Fun Punch is terrific, was that an idea that you guys always have been working on for a while and will the story continue with your next single?
BRAINZAR: Not really and no i don’t think so. The clip was kind of one of those chance things that worked out good for everyone. It was masterminded by our good friend Beaufort. We didn’t have a huge deal to do with it’s making except for the extensive acting classes and hours and hours of shooting we did til we got that shit just right.

WAV: Apart from your own tracks being spun like crazy in clubs around the world your remixes for such artists as K.I.M, Kid Sister, Muscles and The Valentinos have also proven very popular amongst dj’s and punters. Are you working on any new remixes at the moment?
BRAINZAR: We just did some remixes for ZZZ and Cut Copy. There’s a teenagersintokyo remix waiting in the wings too.

WAV: What can the kids expect from your upcoming second EP release?
BRAINZAR: Some of it’s quite different. There’s a guest vocalist on one track and some talkbox mumbling on another. I think as a whole there’s some gear for the club as well as some gear for the loungeroom. We’re pretty happy with it so hopefully people dig it.

WAV: I’m pretty excited to witness the new ‘Live’ Bag Raiders experience for the Parklife shows, what tricks have you got up your sleeves for us?
BRAINZAR: Hmmm… that’s something we’re working on right now. We’re still waiting to get our pyrotechnics license. But hopefully the finale is going to involve us setting fire to our keyboards and playing the Fun Punch lead with our wangs.

WAV: What was the most bizzare thing that has happened at one of your gigs?
BRAINZAR: One time they made us stop in the middle of the set and pulled a name out of a barrel and someone won a used car. That was pretty weird.

WAV: And finally, do you raid many bags these days??
BRAINZAR: Not as many as we used to. These days it’s mostly grocery bags.

MENAC3

One new. Two old. Kris Menace remixes; all should be heard at least once.  Keep your eyes peeled for a Metronomy remix aswell, coming out very very soon.

But for me, nothing is matching the quality of his past remixes of these tracks: “North American Scum” and “Something 4 Porno”. Oh, and who could forget the remix with Lifelike of “I Feel Music in Your Heart”. Gold.

July 26th = ESSENTIAL MIX TIME!!! I care because this Essential Mix will be done by Kris Menace & Falkie!! Bring it on!

[D][L][G]

I’m sitting here on a Sunday night, not excited at the prospect of going back to Uni tomorrow but some things can’t be helped. I’ve been in a huge French-touch mood for weeks now, (I have a habit of listening to music in cycles) which I should start to post up as French Fridays (which will return soon, I know I’ve said it thousands of times but it will return; I got good shizz lined up).

Anyway, DJ DLG came to the scene in 1993 where he was DJ’ing and promoting but it wasn’t till 2002 he was introduced to Dave Armstrong (you guys out there should know his wonderful track ‘Make Your Move’). Here DLG was introduced to Eyezcream, a brilliant record label that saw future releases from DLG (the ‘Epiphany’ series) and two early Lifelike releases! I shouldn’t forget to mention that DLG has his own label Huge Records, featuring many high quality releases.

DJ DLG brings the French sound to a new level, which I’m finding hard to classify as a genre on its own. I guess it could be called “disco-house”, that’s more heavier, ah whatever, it doesn’t matter… But what ever it is, it is funky/souped up and still reminds me of that old Parisian sound I adore.

A track that’s a perfect example of what I’ve been talking about that I’m putting up for you readers to hear is the A-Side of DLG’s ‘Epiphany EP Part 4′ titled “Your Eyes”. The vocal is very luscious, and the rest of the track just follows beautifully; it just works so well. You can really hear DLG’s passion for French-house here, and in the rest of his tracks that follow.

Just for any of you slowpokes out there, I posted a cleverly done re-edit of his of a Pnau track a while back so make sure you check that out here if you have missed it! Check his official website for more up-to-date news.

UNDERGROUND

Das Pop is a Belgian band, founded in the town of Ghent. A few bells might be ringing - their 2007 track “Fool for Love” was red hot, receiving remix action from the likes of SebastiAn, Aeroplane, Yuksek and Brodinski.

Das Pop’s latest tune “Underground” was featured on the rejected Fabriclive mix that Justice did not so long ago. “Underground” has a warming late 80s/early 90s vibe to it and just sounds so soothing, so simple. Take a listen to it here.

And as expected, there is going to be some remixes floating around. There’s already been a Kids Gloves remix in the air so go on a search for that one. Even our very own Van She have chipped in to produce a nice ‘clubby’ version of “Underground but I got some questions to ask: Has Busy P changed his ways and gone all Crookers on us? Is Van She Tech releasing remixes under their band name of just Van She and totally ditching Tech? Or maybe this is just due to poor tagging of tracks hmmm! Whats the story here readers?

OUTLAWS

Peter Kirk makes up The Outlaws (occasionally other people join in on the act too), one of the star signings on Modular’s DJ team, alongside The Bang Gang Deejays and Van She Tech. Born in Bristol (in the UK) but living in beautiful Australia; this guy knows how to put out a bangin’ display of tunes that will get anyone in the perfect party mood. Outlaws hold a residency Starfuckers in Sydney, as well as Massive Attack’s club Tube in Bristol, UK. I was lucky to grab an interview with the man himself:

WAN: Your mixtape “It’s Not French, But It’s F*cking ‘Aving It” is bloody epic. What was the inspiration in the track selection and how big of a task was it to churn out mix like this?
OUTLAWS: Thank you! The tracks are the kind of things I play when I DJ (well sometimes). I love all kinds of music and like to get away with playing as varied a set as possible (so long as it works and people seem into it!). I never understand DJs who have “a set” that they play every gig – that would get really boring. I hope that the mix is a bit different to other things out there and anyone who listens enjoys it!

“Big Task” wise, it’s always awesome fun doing a mix, so it never seems like hard work! I’ve already started work on a new CD, as well as a Modcast thingy for the Modular website. The worst thing is trying to remember where I’ve put records I want to put in a mix!

WAN: Van She Tech, Bang Gang and now Outlaws under the Modular Deejaying umbrella. How’d this come together with Modular?
OUTLAWS: The cosmic forces aligned and it all seemed like a good idea at the time I suppose. I’d left my UK agency, Marty from Modular was starting the agency – Bang Gang were leaving their agents so it seemed like a good idea to all get it together.

WAN: How did you come about working along-side the Bang Gang posse? Was it through Modular or had you known the lads even before that?
Whats it like to be studio buddies? Do you get much ‘work’ done?
OUTLAWS: I met Jamie Doom when I first toured Australia many years ago. We got on well and raved it up – I played at the Bang Gang night a few times, then we hung out when he came to England and then more when I toured again in Australia. I got to know the rest of the guys as well and I think there’s a kind of shared love of daft raving. So yeah, it’s not a Modular thing, it’s more a mates thing. Studio wise, with the amount of time I’ve been spending in Australia it seemed like a good idea. We get quite a lot of work done. There’s lots of pissing about and talking shit, but it’s certainly not the same level of junkie drop in centre the last Bang Gang studio was. Jamie’s busy with his label stuff and I’m busy with production and Gus is busy being Gus. An awesome graphic designer called Mitch is in there with us too – he has an embarassingly incredible work ethic and puts together all the Bang Gang stuff, and the man like Spruce Lee is in there too. All in all I think we’re a happy gang of worker bees.

WAN: Tell us about your upcoming production work. What can we expect from your camp in the coming year?
OUTLAWS: Well, the ongoing effort to finish some original music that I actually like continues. There are a couple of things on the go at the moment. “Magic E” should actually get finished soon and a new track called “We Won’t Stop Partying For Anyone”. At the moment I’m remixing Walter Meego and a lovely new singer on Universal called Gin Wigmore. I’m also doing The Presets, but I’m very late on actually getting that one done! I’m also doing a thing for Herbert’s label Accidental which is cool and the new Toecutter single on Bang Gang 12”. I think I’m doing the new Pnau single too. I want to try and produce a few songs with The Atrocities and I’d love to do something with The Peacocks too – I saw them in Melbourne and really liked on of their songs. Just so this list gets EVEN MORE stupid and long, I was supposed to be doing something with Mission Control – I like them and they’ve got some great songs – so hopefully that will come together too!

WAN: You recently played at the huge Glastonbury Festival in the UK - not for the first time either! Tell us about your most recent experience there.
OUTLAWS: Well – for a start it was all good fun. As soon as I got there I bumped into Skull Juice and Casper Clark from Bloggers Delight – which is always a pleasure because they’re all lovely guys. I played a few records and the ended up playing a storming set back to back with those guys in one of the dance tents with 360 degree visuals and loads and loads of gurning ravers, which was nice. After that it all went a bit spiral fury psychedelic milkshake, I lost a day, bumped into Cut Copy and The Presets, and generally let myself down. Emily Eavis liked my sunburn though. And I dragged Kim Presets out to Bristol after the festival to show him a good night out – he left, drooling, saying it was his favourite UK city. I call that a result.

WAN: Finally, What would be the ideal party to throw? Which dj’s? Venue? Country? Music?
OUTLAWS: It would definitely have to be an outdoor rave – I miss running a sound system and doing Free Parties. There would definitely have to be at least a 50k rig to rattle the lungs and eyeballs. Location wise - it would be nice to do it on a beach in Cornwall, or maybe one of those pretty, isolated ones in Australia. Definitely a free bar and enough Donkey Dust to subdue a colony of T-Rex.

Music wise I reckon: The KLF, Underworld in their prime, Stone Roses (with a full line up), Erol and Soulwax, and my old pal Clark Kunt. I reckon with a line up like that it would be a party everyone could enjoy, not just music obsessed boys!

The other thing to make it perfect would be making sure that no one there had anything to do for a few days afterwards so they could get massively refreshed.

Here’s a rad mix Pete did exclusively for the blog!

MUSIC TALKING

I wish I heard more stuff these days like the track that’s contained in this post. My favourite French producer Fred Falke has just churned out a brilliant remix, something that reminds me of the old French-house/French-touch days, something so funky yet simplistic. The track ‘Music Talking’ is done by DJ Roland Clark (check out his Myspace top friends HA!!!) and The Montanas.

In addition, Falke also did a fine remix of Eric Prydz’s “Pjanoo” that will be released soon. Catch a glimpse of it at KBC.

Please please please purchase the “Music Talking” remix. Do it HERE. Or at Beatport.

KANSAS!

I never thought I would be posting a track by, dare I say it, Sneaky Sound System. But alas, some kick ass people like Lifelike, Tomboy and our own Beni Single [Riot in Belgium] (check our older post on him for a song of his that was on Relish EP 2) have done remixes of Sneaky’s new track “Kansas City”. I’m leaning more towards Tomboy’s mix, but I guess there isn’t one remix that stands out. The vocal is terrible in general and the band is notoriously known for that Tonite Only remix of “Pictures” which has tainted many souls. The Lifelike remix is pretty nice, synthy and all that jazz. Clearly not his best work but still enjoyable. Beni’s, well…, most of it shits me with that repetitive tone, but some cool shit is in there. It’s still cool.

Bottomline is, its Sneaky; I wasn’t expecting much.

NEW JUDAS

Right now, my eyes are bleeding with mucus and i barely have the energy to attend my yearly Après-ski. I have the flu/cold/whatever and it really sucks. Now usually when i’m in this state i listen to nothing but an ambiance CD of rain forest noises that i stole from my yoga/meditation teacher Mother. But I am quickly getting sick of this flu and have resorted to more aggressive music in the hope i can just thrash dance it out of my system.

New Judas is not only getting rid of my cold but it’s making me want to start slam dancing with my hot water bottle. New Judas is a Finnish based record label and is fucking amazing. The artwork is done by The Zonders Vänskap which is how I found them and have various artists who i have never heard of before.

I recommend you give this Label a decent browse. Especially make the effort to watch the video clip for Huoratron - $$ Troopers. Not only is the song genius but it also makes you believe the techno Viking might be doing a collaboration with a Ketamine/VHS influenced Michel Gondry but most of all… It’s really, really… really good. Like really.

Ive posted about A Town In The City before but Im pretty sure that was a while ago now. For a band thats still finishing highschool, these guys sound damn good. I really hope some industry guy occasionally flicks through this blog, cos I’d love it if they got picked up early. Life For A Little Ghost is a little synth-infused, post punk number, definitely a high recommendation. Mr. K’s Arcade Invertables is a track from last year and just as good, with a bit of a TV On The Radio feel to it.

We also have another exclusive here at waves. Bachelor Of Arts, from right here in Melbourne, have been playing for a while now and are just about to release their debut album. A.M.P.M. is the new single off said album. If you like what you hear, theyre playing for the next few Wednesdays (FOR FREE) at the Old Bar on Johnston St and with some amazing bands. On the 16th its Breaker Morant and The Diamond Sea (go seeee), and supporting These New Puritans on the 14th of August.

Last up is a band I only recently got onto called Crystal Stilts, from Brooklyn. Id say they sound a bit like Joy Division but Im getting too much more of an upbeat sound out of the guitars. Maybe if Ian Curtis wasn’t quite so glum, this might be what they’d sound like. A dash of harmonica really lightens them up, in a good way.
