I’m really, really digging the Wild Beasts debut LP Limbo, Panto. They were one of the bands on my to-do list for a while but never got around to getting it. I wish I had of earlier. Basically Wild Beasts are a Leeds, UK, based band that play indie-pop tunes with one of the most individual and striking vocalists Ive heard in a long time. Lead singer Hayden Thorpe just creates the most wonderful falsetto tones and comes across as something of a mix between Antony Hegarty (of Antony and The Johnsons/Hercules and Love Affair) and Morrissey (of The Smiths).
Leslie Salvador is a Melbourne based DJ duo comprising of Luke Brown and Ricardo Ramos. Chances are youve seen them around town, sometimes playing under the guise of Gaptooth. Anyway, this is a new disco mix they’ve thrown together that Ill think you’ll enjoy. You can catch the boys playing at La Di Da in the city on Friday the 31st too.
Tim Sweeney…resident DJ for DFA Records and host of the popular Beats In Space radio show. It’s just been made public that Sweeney will be playing several dates down the east coast of Australia in October!!
For those of you unfamiliar with Tim’s work, he’s been affiliated with DFA for some time now, even lending his scratching talents on the recent release from ‘Hercules and Love Affair‘. Aside from djing various DFA parties around the world he also manages Beats In Space, a live show each Tuesday night from 10:30 - 1am in New York, which showcases weekly guests and dj mixes. Looking for something a bit different? Those of you who seem to never let anything slip past their ears may already have latched onto these guys, but this is just a recent discovery for me. Hercules and Love Affair. Im immediately drawn to them due to the guest vocals of Antony of Antony and the Johnsons on the single ‘Blind’. I really cant flick through my itunes without settling back onto it. His warbling voice warms my eardrums. Basically Hercules and Love Affair are a new act to be signed to DFA, with their debut album dropping very soon. It seems DFA have really been my saviour from the current bombardment of hypercolour infused, compression laden, overdriven electro producers/remixes that fly everywhere these days. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sound, but its just when the place gets full of tail riders that it starts to annoy me. Anyway, this post is about these guys. Enjoy. Oh, and check out the other new DFA band Bot’Ox. Nice.
