I’m sitting here on a Sunday night, not excited at the prospect of going back to Uni tomorrow but some things can’t be helped. I’ve been in a huge French-touch mood for weeks now, (I have a habit of listening to music in cycles) which I should start to post up as French Fridays (which will return soon, I know I’ve said it thousands of times but it will return; I got good shizz lined up).
Anyway, DJ DLG came to the scene in 1993 where he was DJ’ing and promoting but it wasn’t till 2002 he was introduced to Dave Armstrong (you guys out there should know his wonderful track ‘Make Your Move’). Here DLG was introduced to Eyezcream, a brilliant record label that saw future releases from DLG (the ‘Epiphany’ series) and two early Lifelike releases! I shouldn’t forget to mention that DLG has his own label Huge Records, featuring many high quality releases.
DJ DLG brings the French sound to a new level, which I’m finding hard to classify as a genre on its own. I guess it could be called “disco-house”, that’s more heavier, ah whatever, it doesn’t matter… But what ever it is, it is funky/souped up and still reminds me of that old Parisian sound I adore.
A track that’s a perfect example of what I’ve been talking about that I’m putting up for you readers to hear is the A-Side of DLG’s ‘Epiphany EP Part 4′ titled “Your Eyes”. The vocal is very luscious, and the rest of the track just follows beautifully; it just works so well. You can really hear DLG’s passion for French-house here, and in the rest of his tracks that follow.
Just for any of you slowpokes out there, I posted a cleverly done re-edit of his of a Pnau track a while back so make sure you check that out here if you have missed it! Check his official website for more up-to-date news.
I never thought I would be posting a track by, dare I say it, Sneaky Sound System. But alas, some kick ass people like Lifelike, Tomboy and our own Beni Single [Riot in Belgium] (check our older post on him for a song of his that was on Relish EP 2) have done remixes of Sneaky’s new track “Kansas City”. I’m leaning more towards Tomboy’s mix, but I guess there isn’t one remix that stands out. The vocal is terrible in general and the band is notoriously known for that Tonite Only remix of “Pictures” which has tainted many souls. The Lifelike remix is pretty nice, synthy and all that jazz. Clearly not his best work but still enjoyable. Beni’s, well…, most of it shits me with that repetitive tone, but some cool shit is in there. It’s still cool.
Bottomline is, its Sneaky; I wasn’t expecting much.
I’m going to introduce you all to the wonderful world of Lifelike. To save me the time and exhaustion of writing up a description of the man and his career, here’s his bio taken from his official website:
As many lucky teenagers from the late 80s, Laurent started as a bass player in a small highschool band influenced by new-wave and pop music acts like Cabaret Voltaire, Frankie Goes To Hollywood or Simple Minds and discovered the art of sampling thru the first popular 8/16bits computers.
Producing first for other artists in the early & mid 90s, he joined the parisian label 20000ST in 2001 (which was responsible for the hitsingle of Demon You Are My High) to release his first single The Soul Of , which features vocals performed by the NYC originated black icon Mandel Turner.
Massively playlisted by DJs like Alex Gopher and supported by the parisian radio FG, The Soul Of become in a few month the classic summer 2002 club anthem reaching place n°5 in the french dance charts.
A few months later, the single Black Chess (The Cult EP A-side), a dark but dancefloor track, was choosed by Thomas Bangalter, Philippe Zdar & DJ Falcon for the famous Together 2002 Tour as their first record played in each gig, and became an anthem.
Remixing for artists or labels like Annie, Belle, OT Quartet, Headbangers Rec., Demon or Sebastien Leger, helped Laurent to establish his trademark thru a very special kind of sound. His meeting with the german producer Christophe Hoeffel in winter 2004, ended up by the now famous track Discopolis: simply one of the biggest underground selling anthem of 2005/2006. The track, picked up by Alan Braxe (one of the three guys that was behind the huge hit Stardust Music Sounds Better With You) on his label Vulture, is now re-released on Defected with video support from Seb Janiak (Daft Punk Burnin) and new remixes (Alan Braxe, Chris Lake, Kerri Chandler…)
The Presets - Kicking & Screaming (Laneway Festival, Melbourne (2008))
I remember hearing this at Daft Punk… which is pretty much the only thing I can remember from Daft Punk. However, you can just feel yourself getting giddy in anticipation, so much so your not sure if your hungry or you need to have a wank. ALSO a slight treat… you have probably only just heard it on the radio if your lucky. Jori Hulkkonen, Lifelike (yesss!!!), Kevin Saunderson remix’s are going to be surfacing soon, bundled with a KIM edit. MP3:The Presets - This Boys In Love
